My husband and I and another couple...

My husband and I and another couple took the Hampden Estates rum distillery and Greenwood Great House tour out of Falmouth, Jamaica where our cruise ship had docked. The tour was given by local tour operator Paradise Travels in Jamaica. I had contacted Viator and made the tour arrangements a month before the tour. We were instructed to meet the tour operator outside the pier area. And after a little confusion we were able to meet up with our driver Gary. He was great! We left the pier area for a rough ride due to rain-washed roads to the Hampden Estates distillery. But it was worth it! We ended up being the only 4 people on the tour. Our guide said she had had 70 people the day before. We were seated in the bar area and given a rum punch while hearing a brief history of the area. Then after donning our hard hats we walked the grounds to the distillery. It was interesting to learn that they are making the rum the way it was made over 200 years ago. After the distillery we were seated at a table on the veranda of the house on the grounds and enjoyed a lunch of jerk chicken and 'festivals' which were like a fried oval donut. Then we were treated to the rum tasting of two kinds of rum. After this we joined up with our driver Gary and he took us back down the road to Greenwood Great House for a house tour. It was magnificent! It was furnished with antiques and musical instruments that were over 200 years old. And the view from the upper veranda had a sweeping view of the ocean. After this tour it was time to go back to our ship and Gary dropped us off right within the pier area. We had a lovely adventure seeing the Jamaican countryside, sampling food and rum plus getting a peek into Jamaica's past. I wish that Hampden Estates would have had a tour of their house on their property. This is one reason I chose to see Greenwood in order to see one of the Great Houses. The Hampden tour guide said that eventually they might start allowing for tours of their house.
