Greenwich Village and its winding streets were already here when the rest of Manhattan’s streets were laid out as a grid in the early 19th century. See those crooked streets and more during a guided walking tour that covers more than 200 years of history. Check out the beautiful, historic brownstone residential buildings and the area’s bars and restaurants.

Edgar Allan Poe lived and wrote in this historic and beautiful neighborhood. The poet Dylan Thomas drank himself to death here. Radical thinkers John Reed and Upton Sinclair started counterculture movements, and the Village has been a haven for bohemians and a birthplace of the Beat movement. Bob Dylan and Jimi Hendrix played the small clubs and created some of their best music here. Your guide will also share the history of the gay rights movement as you pass landmarks.

Experience the present, learn a lot about the past and maybe even get a glimpse into the future of this iconic space in New York City. Finish the tour in iconic Washington Square before your tour ends at Village Cigar, a West Village relic.

Very very basic information

The gentleman was very nice and accommodating but the information given was very very basic. We did not learn much. All of us had an impression that he thought all of us are very simple village gals from New Jersey. I was not sure how to change that situation during the tour.

Hi Eugenia- thank you for this feedback, we'll be sure to pass it onto our guide. We're sorry to hear you didn't feel the tour was in-depth. We cram quite a bit of history into 90min so certainly, some topics could be discussed deeper if we added more time.

Chris was my walking tour guide on Thursday, July 26, 2018. He was kind and so knowledgeable! He chatted with everyone in our group. It was obvious he researched and studied and new all facts. At the end of the tour, he took time to help me figure out how to find a train and get back to my destination. He handed me a metro card out of his wallet and told me just to add money on it. Such a sincere, kind, great guy! Thanks Chris! Good luck to you! Next time Ill walk and do the food tour with you.
