Terrible Tour of Pearl Harbor
, Nov 2019
Extremely disappointed with the recent tour of pearl Harbor my wife and I did with Beyond the Call to Duty Pearl harbor tour. Our guide/bus driver Mark seemed to know very little about the events of Dec 7, 1941. His only interaction with the group (about 24 people) was on the bus. He did not lead the group once off the bus at pearl Harbor except to hand out admission tickets. My wife and I rented the audio players and headsets which were valuable as the narrator actually leads you on a tour. The tour was delayed by 25 mins at the start as we stopped to pick up 8 people flying in from Maui and then the tour was truncated by 25 mins as these same people needed to get back to the airport to catch their flight. This cut our time on the USS Missouri significantly. An unacceptable decision by tour operator to include these people in our tour. They should have had a separate vehicle and driver. This tour is advertised as a "guided tour." It was anything but. I could have taken an uber paid the admissions and saved money in the process. The tour included a modest lunch. I enjoyed the day at pearl Harbor but overpaid tremendously to visit the historic sites. If I was grading this tour as a term paper the grade would be F-
Humbling history
, Oct 2019
Until you see Pearl Harbor and visualise what happened when the Japanese attacked you really don’t fully understand the impact on Hawaii. The Arizona had recently re-opened and this was a highlight. This tour stopped at all the historical locations with our guide Dennis providing great commentary. Dennis made the day enjoyable with his stories and kept the day moving along at a comfortable pace. If you insist on taking a bag with you then expect to have to leave it at lockers (at your own cost $5) before you enter Pearl Harbor and not pick it up until later that day. You are visiting an active military site so if you don’t need to carry a bag then suggest you don’t. Purse size and cameras okay. While waiting for people to pick up their bags Dennis sang and played his guitar for us - amazing voice! Plenty of time at all the stops. Only downside was it rained when at the Mighty Mo but here in Hawaii you dry pretty quick. The museum shop sold rain ponchos if needed. We had about 20 on the tour so great size to have everyone get back on time before going to the next location.
