Exploring Thorsmork
A group of us young-ish women came for our first hike in Fimmvörðuháls. The excitement had been building for weeks, and I had been ,,on my way“ for years, so we jumped on the tour with Midgard Adventure. And what a brilliant decision that turned out to be! I am an experienced hiker and outdoor person, have hiked on glaciers in Iceland and it´s a passion of mine. I have spent months of my life in hostels all around the world. The Midgard experience exceeded my expectations by far and is THE BEST hostel I have been to! The Migard staff let us come and spend the night before the hike (even though the hostel was ,,closed“). I arrived before the others and what a welcome, the hostel was perfect, a mix of old chic rustic, yoga feel good vibe (as a meditation and yoga teacher I appreciate the vibe) and adventure. Clean, comfortable.I absolutely loved it. I lounged in the yoga-swing and tested all the comfy sofas while listening to music, meditated in the hot tub and the sauna with a view over the glacier and horses with the calves playing in the field. Blissful to say the least. We slept like angels in the comfy beds. And the hike in Fimmvörðuháls hadn´t even started! I don´t (surprisingly) have words. Indescribable experience! Arnar and Bjarni talked to us in the morning, went over the gear and main points. They were very professional and had the positive outlook and charismatic glow of people who live out in nature! Bjarni walked with us, and he is a fabulous guide. He has an exceptionally good and beautiful presence, an fun-loving adventurer and also knowledgable and very respectful, well-mannered and calm. He was very in tune with the group and the speed and tempo was suited for our needs. To top it all, he told us he had learned classical singing and had aimed to be an opera singer. On a personal note, I was basically raised in the Icelandic Opera and my parents sang in the Opera choir and I acted in and love operas (and we are a rare breed) 😊 So my jaw dropped to say the least. Strange how the stars align sometimes. We were so lucky that Kría came with us, Bjarni´s dog and we LOVE Kría. Everything about this trip was so beautiful, friendships were honed and we have started a new hike-club called Kría (which will come to noones surprise when you meet her). I could go on and on. I will reccomend Midgard to all and the hostel too. Now I dream of teaching yoga and meditation on their tours 😊 Thanks Arnar and Bjarni and all the great staff (every single one). Deep deep gratitude. This trip was heavenly and I look forward to coming back.
