Meeting point is at BSI Bus Terminal
Stop At:
Raufarholshellir
We visit the lava tunnel Raufarhólshellir located only 30 minutes from Reykjavík. We will witness the inner workings of a volcanic eruption while we walk in the path of a lava that flowed thousands of years ago. The lava tunnel is one of the biggest in Iceland and gets up to 30 metres wide and 10 metres high. The lava tube ceiling has caved in near the entrance, which creates beautiful columns of light. The fantastic range of colours of the tunnel wall is caused by the different mineral types of the rock.

Beautiful cave

Snow had almost blocked the entrance and we had to slide through a small opening. But once inside, it was truly a memorable experience - the colors inside the cave were awesome and the guide explained the natural formations well.

A cavern of jewels!

This experience was really neat! We went in March and the cavern was covered in shining icy stalagmites that looked like a thousand jewels! It was spectacular! Exceeded our expectations! Not sure how it looks when the ice has melted, but March was gorgeous! Our guide was Magnus and he was very funny and informative. It was very interesting, highly recommend!

Great cave and worth the money

This was only tour where we had to walk to central Bus terminal not local pick up but only took 15 mins from downtown. Once there it was a quick and efficient bus ride to the caves with a short photo stop on way at some lava fields and afterwards we were dropped back at a convenient bus stop closer to where we were staying. The lava tube cave itself is a good size (it takes 4 hours to see whole thing if you want to do the extreme tour)and very different to other caves we’ve seen before. A display of crystal clear ice formations from the heavy snow in different shapes were amazing. It was one of the few tours not made less enjoyable to some extent by extra cold and snowy weather. It added to it if anything! Cave guide was enthusiastic and fun and spoke great English. He also made the geology and science aspect of how the cave was formed easy to understand for everyone.

This tour was interesting and a lot of fun. Our guide was entertaining and knowledgeable, explaining quite a bit about the features of the lava tunnel we were walking through. The tunnel itself is beautiful and I'm so glad it has been preserved. I'd like to come back one day and take the full caving experience!

Amazing experience! Guide provided information about the cave as we passed by each section. Photos are possible to capture, but nothing like your own eyes and experience can describe.
