Icelandic Sagas and Glacier Cave Private Tour from Reykjavik

After pickup from your Reykjavik area hotel, hop inside your rugged, air-conditioned vehicle with your expert guide.

Travel north to the Hvalfjordur fjord (whale fjord), so-called for the whales seen here by Iceland’s early settlers, and watch for these magnificent mammals in the waters as you cross the fjordlands.

Take the undersea Hvalfjordur Tunnel, and continue to the west coast town of Borgarnes. Visit the Borgarnes Settlement Center, an exhibition that charts Iceland’s settlement by Vikings and its famous Sagas, written stories about Iceland’s early families dating from the 10th and 11th centuries.

Next, stop at the Hvanneyr Agricultural Museum to learn about Icelandic farming, and visit Ullarselið, an artisanal shop showcasing hand-made Icelandic woolens.

Then, leave the coast behind and venture into Iceland’s highlands. Admire the mountain views and on route, stop to see the Deildartunguhver hot springs and Hraunfossar waterfalls.

Arrive at Husafell and, after a buffet lunch and some free time, travel up to Langjökull, Iceland’s second-largest glacier. Journey across the ice aboard an 8-wheeled ice truck, and on arrival at the ice cave, walk inside the tunnels with an expert guide.

See the cave room, a huge chamber sometimes used for weddings and other events, and then make your way out of the sub-glacial labyrinth back to the outside world. 

Check out other icecaps including Geitlandsjokull and Thorisjokull, the latter named after the ogre troll Thorir, and then return to Reykjavik, stopping at other attractions along the way.
