Piazza del Popolo , Piazza del Popolo, Roma RM, Italy

At the center of Piazza del Popolo, by the large fountain with the lions and the obelisk. The nearest metro stop is Flaminio (Line A). Our City Wonders coordinators will be wearing blue City Wonders polo shirts or jackets to be easily recognizable at the meeting point.

This activity will end right where it started.
Hop aboard your coach in central Rome, and travel south in air-conditioned comfort to Italy’s Campania region. As you travel, listen to tales about the colorful southern Italian area and Mt. Vesuvius.

After the volcano’s infamous AD 79 eruption, lava and volcanic ash destroyed the cities of Herculaneum and Pompeii. Evidence of those ancient streams of lava is still evident in the area.

First head from Rome to Pompeii. Once a thriving Roman city; today the town is best known for its UNESCO-listed archaeological digs, which are home to a wealth of relics. See incredibly preserved fossils and other ruins, plus plaster imprints of the town’s victims who were buried for years.

See the remains of the Forum and Teatro Grande, where some 5,000 people could once be seated. During your self-guided tour, learn about day-to-day life for the Pompeii locals as you wander streets where ancient shops, cafes and even brothels could be found.

Enjoy free time for sightseeing.

Then, journey to the infamous volcano. Step out of your coach for a steady-paced, walk to Mt Vesuvius’ summit, from where the most breathtaking views await. Make your way over trails covered in pumice rock and ash, before some free time to gaze down into the caldera and across the Bay of Naples.

Finally, head back to Rome by coach and finish with a drop-off at the start point.

Please note: Mt Vesuvius is inaccessible from mid-November to March. During this time, the hike is replaced with a visit to the iconic City of Naples. Take a panoramic bus tour and have some free time to walk around the city center.
Itinerary
Pass By:
City Wonders
Location
Stop At:
Pompeii Archaeological Park
The eruption in AD 79 spelled a fiery end for Pompeii, but the catastrophe also almost perfectly preserved the port city under layers of Volcanic ash. Thousands of years later, you can still explore the eerie streets and step inside homes, bathhouses and fast food places on your self-guided tour. You’ll travel from Rome to Pompeii in an air-conditioned private coach, accompanied and entertained all the way by your expert tour co-ordinator. Skip the line at Pompeii and head for a leisurely self-led tour around the city which paints a vivid picture of life in final days before the eruption. Throughout the ruins, you’ll come across harrowing death casts: plaster recreations of unfortunate citizens preserved by the superheated volcanic ash.
Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes
Admission Ticket Included
Stop At:
Vesuvius National Park
It’s a short coach ride from Pompeii to the foot of the volcano that still looms above it. A half-mile hike from the parking lot takes you right to the sometimes still-steaming crater of Mt. Vesuvius – still perhaps the most dangerous volcano in the world. Stand at the epicentre of that ancient disaster and feel awe at the utter devastation it must have caused, to blast an entire city off the map for millennia. Then turn and enjoy the contrast: the crater offers the most stunning view of the sun-drenched Bay of Naples. In the winter months, when Vesuvius is closed for hiking, the tour travels from Pompeii to Naples, with panoramic views of the volcano and historical commentary from your tour co-ordinator along the way. You’ll have ample free time to explore Naples – a city as vibrant and alive as Pompeii is quiet and affecting – before the comfortable coach returns you to Rome.
Duration: 2 hours
Admission Ticket Included
  • Confirmation will be received at time of booking
  • IMPORTANT INFORMATION REQUIRED FROM ALL PASSENGERS: You MUST provide all passenger names at the time of booking in order to visit Mount Vesuvius or you may be refused entry.
  • During summer months in rare cases of inclement weather or strikes, the crater of Vesuvius may be closed to visitors. In this case, an alternative visit to the city of Naples will be included.
  • Not wheelchair accessible
  • Near public transportation
  • Not recommended for travelers with back problems
  • No heart problems or other serious medical conditions
  • From late November to March the Vesuvius isn't accessible and it is replaced with a visit to the city of Naples with panoramic bus tour and free time.
  • Option to upgrade to Pompeii, Amalfi Coast and Positano Small-Group Day Trip from Rome with private coach (Mt Vesuvius or Naples not included)
  • *Upgrade Option ONLY: From November 1st until end of March, instead of Positano we will visit the town of Amalfi, as in Positano during the winter months most shops and restaurant are closed.
  • *Upgrade Option ONLY: IMPORTANT- Due to an overwhelming amount of weekend traffic on the Amalfi Coast area during peak season, and to avoid significant delays, we may visit Sorrento instead of Positano on Saturdays and Sundays between June 1st and September 11th, and also on Monday August 15th (an Italian holiday)
  • The hike up to the crater of Vesuvius requires a good level of general fitness. The walk is uphill at a 14 degree angle and takes roughly 20 minutes.
  • Travelers should have a strong physical fitness level

Well worth it. Would come again

It was all very well organised, and the tour leader (Barbara) was very knowledgeable and friendly and she took us through the whole tour with a lot of information. Also our Pompei guide (Carla) and our coach driver (Antonio) were very good. We really enjoyed the trip and better than expected. My children loved it. We would definitely recommend it. Arriverderci!

11 hrs on a bus : 3 hrs on site…… not worth the price.

The tour took us where it said it would. Pompeii and Positano. However, the ratio of time spent on a bus to the time actually spent on site was not worth the price or headache. The bus ride for 11 hours in total was spent listening to people loudly snoring, smacking candy loudly in their mouths, and an overheated baby squealing. We would’ve been better off taking the bullet train from Rome to Naples and hiring a guide there for Pompeii. Positano has a nice view, but as a day trip from Rome it’s just too far to be worth it. There’s nothing but overpriced, generic souvenirs in the town. If you do go - be sure to bring noise canceling headphones and maybe pack your own food. They stop for 15 min each way at a very expensive tourist rest stop in Cassino. Before arriving, they let you know there is no time for lunch but you have only one option of purchasing a pizza/drink/desert combo for 15 euro. It was waiting on the bus after the tour - but it is a poor representation of pizza from Napoli (or pizza anywhere for that matter). Getting into Pompeii was efficient and our local guide moved us along w/ occasional humor. But the tour is very quick. Then back on the bus for a long drive to transfer to another shuttle to get down towards Positano. There you have 90 min of free time which is just enough to walk down to look at the small, crowded beach and back up to get back on the shuttle, and back to the bus. Then they made a “special” stop at a limoncello factory (not actively running at the time) which was only a very expensive gift shop for 15min. Then back on the bus for 4+ hours to Rome. Our tour guide was sweet but timid. Any time she got on the bus microphone to mention something she was timid and giggly - but really didn’t share anything that exciting or have the kind of personality that you hope for in a tour guide. She then really only starting rambling (and giggling a lot) into the mic for the last 45 min clearly working her way up to timidly asking for tips. Save your money, your time, and your sanity. Take a bullet train. Rent a car. Just don’t tether yourself to a 14-hr day on this bus being herded like cattle from one expensive tourist stop to the next.

Hot but very nice

All the guides we had was really amazing. But it was a little rushed since we had a lot of things to see and do in only one day. And please don't do this in the middle of summer with extreme temperatures. It was absolutely too hot to focus sometimes

Seeing Pompeii with its buildings, artifacts, incredible tiled floors, and infrastructure, frozen in time from so long ago was awesome. Then achieving our bucket list of climbing mount Vesuvius topped off what was a definite highlight of our European trip. Incredible!

This is a fascinating experience from all points-of-view. One unanticipated bonus was a “pit-stop” in Cassino, where you can get good views of the oft-destroyed abbey at Monte Cassino. The Pompeii ruins are amazing, but the walking is something of a challenge (extreme heat and extremely irregular paving stones everywhere). The bus ride up the slope of Vesuvius is HARROWING (I can only imagine what it must be like for the automobile drivers headed in the oncoming direction). The climb to the crater is very challenging for a 67-year old, but well worth the effort. Be advised that you are told to go only as far as 30 minutes will allow and then turn around—wherever you are—so that the tour can remain on time. But the views from the top (both down into the crater and out into the bay) are phenomenal. Our guide was excellent every step of the way.

Amalfi Coast/Pompeii tour

This tour was wonderful. Very well organised, they stayed on track with activities and timing. It is a very long day so it was great that the bus driver was so experienced and the bus was large, air conditioned and comfortable. The tour guide for Pompeii was brilliant. Just ensure you bring water.

Not recommended, so many things wrong with this. For some reason we were rushed through the Pompeii tour in just over an hour, but then they immediately gave us over an hour and a half lunch break. PLEASE give us more time in Pompeii, that was ridiculous. Then our tour guide offered to take us to a local restaurant that the tour guides eat at, very inexpensive, he kept saying 5 or 6 Euros. Repeatedly said it was not at all touristy, but it was literally called Restaurante Turistica, a terrible tourist trap where they tried to trick us into spending 4 times the money we were told it would cost. We get to Vesuvius and were told that if we cannot get to the top and bottom in an hour that they will leave us behind because there is a €100 fine for parking too long, again, ridiculous, give us less time to eat and actually let us climb Vesuvius in peace, an extra half hour there would have made a big difference. Overall, they got us there and back to Florence, so they get a star for that, but I was left feeling like I have to take my kids back to Pompeii to actually see it.

They made the process so easy. Easy to find the guide on the day of the tour, easy walk to bus, air conditioned ride, sights pointed out along the way with a good clean rest stop before we arrived at Pompeii

Barbara ❤️

The trip was great however I think it was a little rushed to cram everything in plus travel. I'd recommend visiting Pompeii and Vesuvius from Naples rather than Rome to cut out the travel. Barbara was a fantastic guide, very knowledgable and kind. Our driver was also very friendly. The guide in Pompeii wasn't very enthusiastic, felt like he was reading a script he had read multiple times, probably would have preferred an audio guide and self walking. The price is worth it for the convenience.

We did the Pompeii and Vesuvius option and it was a great experience. Had a guided tour of Pompeii - recommend rather than wandering around by yourself. Vesuvius is a good trek but a must really and just when you’re about to give up it really is just around the corner. Francesca(?) was a great guide and looked after us well.

If you’re planning your trip around Italy and are skeptical about this tour and how much you’ll be able to see - don’t be! I booked this trip on a whim because I was flying into Rome and wanted the best possible way to experience the magic of Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast, and boy, did we get it! Our first stop of the tour (post breakfast) was at Positano, where I got to see the beauty of the Mediterranean and the surrounding hills on my way there! The streets of Positano looked just like they do in the pictures - the only draw was that we had a strict timeline of 1h 40mins (which is too short to be fully able to experience the area fully) but I was able to have a sit down meal with my kids, see the beach, and buy some olive oil and other souvenirs while my daughter bought a nice woven basket tote! After our tor group stopped for limoncello tasting in Sorrento, we went to Pompeii where I was finally able to achieve my lifelong dream of visiting the ruins! Our tour guide for the archeological park had an incredible sense of humor, knew his stuff and was sensitive to our need to be in the shade to cool off every so often, as we were in blazing 100 degree temps! Our wonderful tour guide, Semih, made the 13 hr day more memorable with his wealth of knowledge and affable personality! He kept the crowd engaged, was thoughtful enough to bring our food to the tour bus if we needed it (as we forgot our desserts at one point), plus he was warm and felt like a friend to all of us as he shared with us his backstory as did we, seeing as how there were other tourists from different areas of the world. By the time the tour concluded in the evening, I was incredibly sad to see him go! The driver of the tour bus did an excellent job when it came to driving, specifically navigating the tricky windy, narrow roads along the coastal areas! Overall, I walked away feeling satisfied that I was able to experience each of the offerings advertised on the tour, enough to influence me to come back to Italy again for a separate trip to the Amalfi Coast for a longer stay! The only thing I would change about this tour was the fact that it took place during a major heat wave across Europe and the heat got to be unbearable at times, but some things can’t be helped! Final verdict? Book this, you won’t regret it!

Pompeii is amazing! It’s a long day and esp since we did Vesuvius hike after we were exhausted! Loved our guide at Pompeii - Bernadette. The Pompeii ruins are a must see. Nice to be bused out instead of having to deal with train and other transport from Rome.

What a tour!

It has been over 11 years since I was in Italy. To be honest, my spouse and I were dreading this 13 hour tour. After we just had another 13 hour to Sienna and Pisa. This tour was awesome. Our tour guide, Claudia, was absolutely FANTASTIC! She was funny, considerate and most importantly, highly communicative. Her English and knowledge of Italian history make the tour easily to follow. We would definitely go on other tours with her. Also, our driver, Francisco was master behind the wheel. To navigate our tour bus on the winding road to Positano with ease. We never felt any anxiety at all. Great tour provided us ever last memories. Thank you!
