Before departing Rome on your day trip to Venice, meet a tour host to receive your round-trip ticket for the high-speed train, your vaporetto pass for Venice’s water taxi network and your skip-the-line ticket for St Mark’s Basilica. Then head to the train station for the 3.5-hour journey north.

When you arrive in Venice, meet a second tour host, who will give you a map and provide tips about what to see and do. Then you’re on your own to explore the city independently. Make your way through the tangled web of campos (squares), calli (narrow streets) and bridges, soaking up the romantic and old-world ambience for which the city is so beloved. Go in search of waterfront shops and restaurants along Riva degli Schiavoni, pose on the Bridge of Sighs, admire the Gothic Doge’s Palace or visit St Mark’s Square.

Make sure to use your skip-the-line ticket at St Mark’s Basilica to admire its gilded mosaics and marble floors, and then perhaps visit San Polo for a piece of more authentic local life, where you can stroll past shops inside old homes and stop by a bàcaro (snack bar) to try Venetian specialties like cicheti (tapas-like small food dishes).

With your vaporetto pass (good for 12 hours, although you won’t be in Venice that long), you can travel easily around the city by water taxi or waterbus, and perhaps take a ride across the iconic Grand Canal. When your time in Venice comes to an end, meet your host at Santa Lucia Station to board the train back to Rome, where your day trip concludes in the late evening.

The interior was covered with gold mosaics.

When visiting Rome this is a must do.

really comfortable train ride, the guide was superb, very friendly and very knowledgeable. The whole day was really well organised. Plenty of time to do your own thing as well and get something to eat. The gondolas are a bit expensive but you can't go to Venice and not have a ride in one.

I felt bad for the tour guide
RosieNOLA_RN

There is so much I could say about the tour. The tour guide was wonderful--but he was put in a bad situation. Gray Line Tours was the operator, and there were probably about 30 or more people. with one tour guide, trying to communicate with the tour group in English, Spanish, and Italian. The tour guide was friendly and polite, but said he wasn't an official tour guide so was limited on the amount of information he could give. We were given tickets to the train, then onto a ferry from the terminal to cross over into Venice. Once in Venice, we were herded into St Marks--made a square in the building and then out. Then time to explore on your own, then herded back for a gondola ride, then free time, then ferry ride back, more free time and train ride. I think there should have been a tour guide for each language spoken, as it was unrealistic for this young man to try to communicate in three languages. He had a positive attitude and was very polite, but many of us felt bad for him. Otherwise, we did meet nice people on the tour, and we enjoyed the gondola ride and walking around in Venice. Gray Line has enough money not to be so greedy and provide appropriate resources.

Dear Guest, we appreciate your review and the time spent writing your opinion. We're glad you got a chance to explore Venice under the guidance of Alessandro (it must have been him), one of our best tour leaders. This trip is a one-day excursion to Venice which aims to let our guests take a glimpse of this marvelous city in a few hours. It's not easy to always provide an impeccable experience and match each and every guest's expectations but we do our best to do it. Being an excursion and not a guided tour, as indicated online and on our catalogs, the tour leader is there to help you and assist you but limited in his/her historical information. That said, all our leaders are experts in their field and fluent in two to three languages and they're used to switching from a language to another. We thank you nonetheless for your sweet words and your feedback will be taken into consideration. Kind regards, the Gray Line I Love Rome Team

It is a long day from Rome but well worth it. Our guide met us in Rome and travelled with us all the way to Venice and back. Throughout the trip she provided interesting details about Venice and told us what to expect once we arrived in Venice and the free time available. She suggested places to visit and where to eat and we returned together at the end of the day for a late arrival back in Rome.

Venice is crowded but still a must see

The tour went fairly smooth. The train is comfortable and fast. Still three hours each way. Venice is still a beautiful city. But the crowds are large, particularly in the church. But the church is worth the visit. The gondola ride is somewhat stereotypical but must do at least once. The store price are escalated. Buy something to eat dinner on train ride back near the station, many choices, including grocery store. Buy water. You can buy on train slightly higher.

Beautiful! I think the guide has to stay longer with the group and tell more of the history and show all the most important places.

Venice Independent Day Trip from Rome by High-Speed Train

Meeting place for this tour was at least confusing. Need to be more specific. Termini Station, by bus terminal. I love Rome Italy tour, Grey Line, located in the center of parking lot. Tour guide was unprepared. Alessandro did a less than professional job, put more stress on the customer than needed. Microphone sets were horrible. One of ours was not working. Finally, on the train we got another that worked. Overall ok tour, we enjoyed Venice, dispite the problems. No one could tell us when the tour would finish. I tried to call the main office, but no one answered the phone. This was more than 24 hours prior to tour. Asked when it would return, because I needed to arrange transportation. 2245 was the arrival time at Termini Station in Rome. Finally, got this information on train. Could not communicate with my transportation, and lost my pick up. Had to hire another taxi to return us to our accommodations. Overall, disappointed. This could have gone smoother, a better guide, and ability to communicate with Grey Tours. I would not recommend this tour withour significant changes.

Dear Tom, we're so grateful for this feedback, even if of course we're mortified that your experience fell short of your expectations. Some improvements will be implemented immediately (meeting point instructions), some others will take a little longer to assessed and put into place, but it's really our aim to use our clients' feedback to leverage improvement and make us better. Thanks again, your reaching out helps us and the community that supports Gray Line Rome. Kind regards, the Reviews Team

We really enjoyed the tour to Venice! Our guide, Antonella, was so good about taking care of all the details. She helped us maneuver through the streets of Venice, but also gave us time to do some touring, eating, and shopping on our own. Loved the gondola ride!

August is HOT in Italy. We saw all of the big things including St Mark's Basilica, Doge's Palace, the bridge, St. Mark's Square, ferry on the Grand Canal, etc. Food and shopping is plentiful. We did not do the gondola ride as it was over$120 for 2 people.
