Itinerary
Stop At:
Kursalon Wien - Sound of Vienna
Begin your evening with dinner at the Restaurant Johann inside the beautiful Kursalon Vienna concert hall. Sit down to a gourmet 4-course dinner of seasonal Viennese dishes amid the exquisite surroundings of one of Vienna’s most famous and historic concert venues. (See Sample Menu below.) It was here that the waltz was popularized in the 19th century thanks to Viennese composer Johann Strauss. Performing dances and concerts regularly, the venue soon became a popular meeting place for Viennese society to enjoy music and savor the joie de vivre. Still preserving its historical roots, the Kursalon now has a modern flair, with four spectacular ballrooms on two floors and a spacious terrace with views over Stadtpark. After dinner, you’ll be escorted to your seat in Lanner Hall for the Salonorchester Alt Wien concert, one of today’s best-known interpreters of classical Viennese music. Savor the lilting sound of waltzes, polkas, arias and duets, as well as operetta and piano concerto melodies accompanied by opera vocalists and ballet soloists. Revel in the performances of Strauss’ ‘Voices of Spring,’ ‘Roses from the South, ‘The Sigh Galop,’ ‘A Little Night Music’ and ‘On the Beautiful Blue Danube,' and Mozart’s ‘Rondo alla Turca’ and the overture to the opera Le Nozze di Figaro. Be enchanted by Strauss' 'My Lord Marquis' from The Bat operetta and 'Entree Zsupan' from The Gypsy Baron operetta, as well as Johann Schrammel’s ‘Vienna remains Vienna' and many more pieces from Viennese musicians throughout the centuries. If you've booked the first two rows with your VIP ticket, enjoy a glass of sparkling wine during the interval, and take home a Johann Strauss CD with your Kursalon Orchestra program. -------------------- ITINERARY -------------------- Sample Menu: April – May First course (choose one): • Viennese tafelspitz (boiled beef in broth) with Styrian beans and apple vinaigrette • Mousse of smoked trout with cucumber crème fraicheSecond course (choose one): • White cream of asparagus • Beef consommé with wild garlic dumplingsMain course (choose one): • Grilled fillet of salmon with asparagus-parsley risotto and crème fraiche sauce • Roast rump of veal with spring onion purée and glazed broccoliDessert (choose one): • Vanilla panna cotta with rhubarb and mint • 'Kaiserschmarrn' tartlet with plum sauceJune – July First course (choose one): • Thin sliced Viennese tafelspitz with chive sauce, pumpkin seed oil and green salad • Smoked trout in a mousseline sauce and Parmesan quiche of young onionsSecond course (choose one): • Cream of potatoes with parsley pesto • Beef consommé with semolina dumplingMain course (choose one): • Grilled fillet of salmon on thyme-zucchini risotto with lemon foam • Roast rump of veal on young onion polenta with sautéed Brussels sproutsDessert (choose one): • Mousse of elderflower with fresh strawberries • Mango tartletAugust – September First course (choose one): • Original Austrian beef salad with pumpkin seed oil vinaigrette • Mousse of Austrian char with creamy zucchini-dill saladSecond course (choose one): • Carrot cream with dill crème fraiche • Beef consommé with chive-batter dropsMain course (choose one): • Grilled fillet of salmon with a spinach feta soufflé, rosemary potatoes and pumpkin ragout • Roast rump of veal with olive purée and steamed carrotsDessert (choose one): • Cappuccino with Mascarpone and cranberry jelly • Homemade pear tart with cinnamon yogurtOctober – December First course (choose one): • Carpaccio of Viennese tafelspitz on seasonal winter leaf lettuce and apple confit • Filet of Austrian sheatfish with parsnip-salsify saladSecond course (choose one): • Pumpkin soup with pumpkin seed oil • Beef consommé with liver dumplingsMain course (choose one): • Grilled fillet of salmon on risotto of red turnip and wasabi foam • Roast rump of veal with tomato gnocchi and sautéed beansDessert (choose one): • Mousse of Styrian apple with yogurt and a cinnamon crumble • Tiramisu of Viennese mélange with foamy egg liqueur

We were a little disappointed the Kursalon restaurant was undergoing renovations so the dinner was moved, but we had a lovely time. It was just down the street at Parlor and the service and food was delicious. The concert was incredible, we had chills from the performances especially the female vocalist. Loved the variety of the orchestra on its own, some dancing and some singing numbers. Perfect amount of time as well. I was worried I might get bored haha, not the case! Very great experience when visiting Vienna.

We totally enjoyed our experience at The Kursalon in Vienna. As it turned out, the hotel AMA Waterways used in Vienna after our Christmas Markets cruise was The Intercontinental which is across the street. Our dinner was excellent. Drinks were not included but were reasonable. Service was very good. The concert featured a wonderful ensemble, excellent dancers and great soloists. We highly recommend this event and would attend it again ourselves.

Great Concert, poor food

Kursalon is a beautiful venue, perfect for the Strauss and Mozart concert we saw. The orchestra, singers and dancers were superb. We also booked the 4 course 'gourmet' dinner and it was a disappointment. The service was excellent but the food itself was poor. I think the chef's were concentrating on presentation rather than quality and whilst the food looked nice, unfortunately it didn't taste that good.

Beautiful setting first and foremost. The evening was very well spaced out and timed. From arrival to each course arriving. Food was very good. The concert was very fast paced. The opera and dances were timed well and added to the humour of the pieces. A very enjoyable evening

Beware! I was denied entry -- offered a refund and then denied the refund

Sadly I can't review the concert but I heard from others it was wonderful. I was wearing a thin, belted coat over a pair of leggings and was denied entry because "coats are not allowed in the concert hall." Because I did not feel it was appropriate to wear leggings and a shirt that does not cover the bum I was advised to go to the Box Office for a refund. I stood in line and spoke with the Box Office clerk to learn that because I paid by Viator, the box office clerk was not able to process a refund and instead instructed me to do via Viator which I did while standing in the lobby. I asked for the manager's card just in case and glad I did because now they are denying the refund. The information does state when purchasing the tickets that no sneakers or jeans are allowed in the concert hall. Yet I saw many people in jeans and sneakers enter and even took photos in case my refund was denied. No where does it state that coats are not allowed and yet they do make exceptions for leather coats and puffer vests as we pointed them out and asked why they were allowed. Thanks to a series of air travel problems, I arrived in Vienna without my luggage but since I was on notice about the sneakers and jeans I did go out and buy some black boots to replace my traveling sneakers and my husband bought a pair of pants to replace the jeans he travelled in. I thought my thin, belted, teal colored trench would suffice instead of the oversized Baylor University sweatshirt and T-shirt I traveled from the US wearing over leggings. Apparently I was wrong and while I was disappointed to miss the show, I was more upset that they WOULD allow sneakers and jeans which were clearly identified as being disallowed when purchasing the ticket. Beware, you may be discriminated against if you are wearing a thin coat they don't like. Be prepared to check your coat and you may experience selective enforcement of the rules as I did. As of yet Viator has denied the refund the manager offered. If I had purchased directly I would have been given a refund immediately in the Box Office. For this reason I will not likely make more purchases through Viator since doing so cost me the refund I was offered and I wasn't given any support from Viator after the fact.

Dear Lisa, I am terribly sorry to hear that you had such an experience at the entrance and was later denied a refund from Viator. Sound of Vienna would like to make it up to you somehow and we will gladly send you a complimentary concert voucher for 2 pax which is valid for one year. Please kindly send us your address to sound@soundofvienna.at referring to this offer. I hope there will be another opportunity soon where you can visit our concert. Sincere apologies on behalf of Sound of Vienna, Alexandra

Fantastic night

Whether you are a classical music lover or not, you won't be disappointed with their performance. Whenever people asked me which part of the trip I missed the most, Kursalon concert would be my answer. It's just about right, not as heavy as formal symphonic concert, but more than beautiful to lighten up the spirit in Vienna so that it's a splendid moment for life.

Definitely recommend!

I absolutely recommend this concert! It was one of the highlights of our trip to Vienna and we did it on our last night to do something special. We were very happy with the A level tickets. We were 2nd row seats and really it was like first row because there was no one in the VIP seats in front of us. The musicians were top quality and we enjoyed the opera singers and the ballet dancers as well. They added something wonderful to the show. The only reason I gave this 4 stars is because the check-in process was tedious and the dinner wasn't that great. The ticket from viator says to meet in the restaurant at 6pm. When we did, they said at the restaurant that we actually had to present our voucher at the box office and exchange it for tickets and a dinner voucher. The office is there in the building, but the line was 20 people long. So that was a pain in the butt and we were late for dinner. The dinner itself wasn't that great and the service wasn't great. They have prix-fixe menus, but they were different than the ones that Viator had posted on the site, so it wasn't what I was expecting. Also, some of the vegetarian options looked good, even though I'm a not a vegetarian, but they told us we couldn't have things from different "tracks." We had to stick with one or the other. Why not just make a menu and put the two meat options and one veg option under each track so there are 3 options to choose from for each course? There were some courses that I didn't really like, so I would have preferred the veg option for one or two of them. It was worth it for the concert!

Only the overly warm salon where concert was held detracted from this experience. It was a warm evening. Restaurant dining experilence included very good food and service. Very pleased to have included this in our Vienna visit.
