Meet your driver at your Vienna hotel, settle inside your private vehicle, and then travel through Lower Austria into Slovakia. On route, gaze at the passing countryside dotted with vineyards and windmills, and after about an hour, arrive in Bratislava, Slovakia’s capital, on the River Danube.

Join up with a local guide, and start out on a private walking tour of the city highlights. As you stroll, learn about Bratislava’s ancient and medieval past, and its time under communism from 1948 until 1989.

Admire Bratislava Castle, the hilltop fortress-palace that towers over the city. Hear how the complex was the seat of many Hungarian kings, and then view the Slovakian Parliament, standing on a neighboring hill.

Next, head into the cobbled Old Town to admire the medieval and baroque architecture and monuments. Stroll to St. Michael’s Gate, the only remaining of Bratislava's original city gates, and pause outside the Slovak National Theatre and Accademia Istropolitana, the first university of human science in Hungary, founded in 1465.

Admire the Town Hall and St. Martin’s Cathedral, whose spire is topped by a crown marking it as the coronation church of Hungary’s kings from 1563 to 1830. Stop for photos of the baroque Palffy Palace, where Mozart performed when he was just six, and take in Leopold de Pauli’s Palace, an 18th-century residence famous for hosting a concert by the 9-year old Franz Liszt in 1820.

After your 2.5-hour tour, leave your guide and enjoy time to stroll and relax independently. Perhaps treat yourself to a meal (own expense) at one of the restaurants or pubs, or shop for Slovakian crafts like lacework, ceramics or corn husk dolls.

Then, meet back up with your driver and journey back to Vienna, where your trip ends with a hotel drop-off.

Traveling off season is great, small...
John W

Traveling off season is great, small crowds and few crying babies. One disadvantage is many of teh tours are not available. We were lucky, and happy, to book this private trip to Bratislava from Vienna. A little pricy but when the E Class Mercedes rather than a tour bus shows up at your hotel and comfortably whisks you off to Bratislava you begin to forget the price. We met up with Jiri in Bratislava. He is part of a local tour company, Authentic Slovakia. The one disappointment was, if you take the Authentic Slovakia tour locally you go by bicycle obviously not in the winter or a vintage '60's Skoda car. We experienced the latter in Poland during a Communist tour using a vintage East German Trabant which was rough and bouncy but made the tour even more realistic for the period. The local riding in the Mercedes and walking tour was excellent hitting the high points of the citys history in about 4 hours. We did not know the long and interesting history of the city and this was a great way to get it. We stopped by a local diner for lunch, one where the locals eat, and got a taste of local food and some very good craft beer. If you are in Vienna and short on time or just want to be pampered book this tour. If you have some time take the train to Bratislava and take the local tour with the bike or car.
